Introduction

The Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) operates under the Transport & Commerce Department of the Government of Odisha. It is the only government organization providing passenger transport services within the state of Odisha.

History and Development

1948: The State Government took over bus services operated by erstwhile princely states, forming the State Transport Services (STS) under the Transport Department.
1950: The Central Act, R.T.C. Act (Act No. 64 of 1950), was enacted, requiring the creation of Road Transport Corporations by respective State Governments. OSRTC Rules were established in 1967.
1974: On May 15, 1974, the assets and employees of State Transport Services were transferred to OSRTC, which began its operations.
Funding: OSRTC started with share capital contributions from the State Government and the Central Government in a 2:1 ratio.
1990: The O.R.T. Company, primarily operating in southern Odisha, merged with OSRTC, bringing all its assets, liabilities, and employees.
